Saying "Happy New Year!" Around the World
Irish toast: In the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship, never in want.Italian proverb: "Old wine and friends improve with age."Whatever language you might want to use, May the Lord bless you and your family as we enter into a new year of service and praise to Him. District Deputy’s Message Pat Cantwell, PGK, PCP Worthy Chaplain and Brothers As I write this, we are preparing for Christmas. With everything we do at work, in the department stores, with the Knights of Columbus, we must remember the importance of Family, one of the five areas of activity we espouse. Whether that means doing things together outside the home, or celebrating the season as a family within, there is no time like the present to let your family members know what they mean to you. For the Program Directors in the Councils, this is the time to make sure you have completed (or nearly completed) at least one activity this quarter (October 1 through December 31) in each of the five areas: Family, Church, Community, Council, and Youth. Program reports must be received by the State Program Director, Mike Sallese, no later than January 15. Remember, they must be signed by the Grand Knight and the District Deputy. If you can get them to me by the Mid-Term Meeting on Saturday, January 5, I can sign them then and we can deliver them to Mike that day. Otherwise, you have to mail them or make other arrangements. (Yes, only one more quarter for activity reports after this one.) Speaking of the Mid-Term Meeting, all Grand Knights and Deputy Grand Knights should make every effort to attend. And please bring your wives! For the DGKs, there will be programs in the afternoon to help prepare you to assume the position of GK and to run the council. Whether or not you can attend, please make sure you respond to Pat Corcoran, so he can get a count and estimate the food. Lunch and dinner are paid for by the State Council, and they don’t like to order more food than will be needed. Thanks. Previously I had mentioned a possible district event on Friday, December 21 that featured a showing of the Our Lady of Charity icon. We couldn’t put it together, so that is no longer on the schedule. Finally, best wishes for a Happy and Holy Christmas from Maria and me. Vivat Jesus. Annual Retreat at Loyola My fellow Knights: Our annual weekend retreat at Loyola Retreat House is fast approaching. The dates for our 2008 retreat will be Friday January 25th thru Sunday January 27th. This year will also be Loyola's 50th anniversary and so this year’s retreat promises to be extra special. The cost for the retreat weekend is $208. Please do not let the cost be a reason for not attending. Provisions have been made for those who may be experiencing financial difficulty. This is an opportunity to experience a tremendous spiritual experience and come away feeling very refreshed and renewed deep within. Please see the St. John the Evangelist Church Bulletin or contact Brother George Malone at 301-868-4087 or Brother Bob Powers at 301-782-2939 for further information or to register. Brother Bob Powers ANNUAL COUNCIL CHRISTMAS POT LUCK DINNER More than 35 members and their families attended the dinner on Tuesday, December 18th in which great food and fellowship were enjoyed. If you were not there, that’s your loss. We had a great time. Congratulations to PGK Jim Dobson, PGK Ken Muir and Chancellor Steve Italiano for coordinating the dinner. Annual Chili Cook Off The next activity will be our Annual Big Chili Cook off in January. If you have inclinations of being a gourmet chef, this competition is not for you. HOWEVER, bring in your best effort to be judged by an impartial panel of judges (if we can find any) and even if you don’t come in first have the satisfaction of presenting your culinary expertise. Provide an amount that will serve four or more. Recognition will be given to those who brave the criticism of your peers. We are opening the Annual Big Chili Cook Off to the other Councils in our district to enlarge the competition. A trophy will be awarded to the winner of the best chili. Calendar of Events
